REACTIVE OR RESPONSIVE?

When I saw that Skype had been Microsofted (verb in common usage), I reacted immediately, yelling in frustration. Skype has become unintelligible, with controls available to NSA staffers only…..not me. High energy, no results.
When I bashed my head in a nasty fall, the responding EMT’s quickly, quietly and competently stopped the bleeding, checked for other damage, and got me to good medical help in minutes (I’m fine…it was minor). Low energy, great results.

Which kind of company do you encourage?

?????????????????????????????????????

Most companies grow up reactive, working quickly to survive the daily flood. That’s grasshopper management, hopping about looking for food.
Winning companies soon shift to work toward high-value targets, ignoring the kerfluffle that infects groups of people daily.

What drives the shift? Courage.
The Courage to:
1. Choose a VERY few priorities, and commit to them.
2. Match key leaders carefully to their responsibilities.
3. Gather those leaders to chart the short-term path to improvement.
4. Listen and support them when they stumble.
5. Ask for BOTH the lesson learned and the next positive step.
6. Spend most time and thought on the details of execution, not planning.
7. Gently nudge back to core goals.
8. Stop chasing squirrels.

Rate yourself as a leader on each of the above. Use a 1-10 scale, with 10 being excellent. (You could rate each of your top leaders, too.) Total your scores.

The scoring scale:
8-32: Way behind the curve. Needs focused attention now.
33-55: Generally doing OK, lots of upside.
56-75: Nailing it. Frequent focused praise is due.
76+: Dreaming. Re-score.
